Poetry Book Series

The best-judged poetry of each year is released in an annual series of hardback books. This series of covers feature geometric, color-coded illustrations inspired by Josef Albers’ paintings and color theories.

The modestly-budgeted project didn’t allow for illustration or photography, so a visual system was developed focusing on type and color. The resulting cover design template is easily adapted for each new volume.

Project scope: Series of book cover designs
Typeface: Sentinel by Jonathan Hoefler

The dust jacket’s colored bars are wrapped around the books’ spines, so the colored sections are aligned on bookstore shelves.

Sentinel is a versatile typeface family that is both legible and warm — a calming design that interprets 19th century slab serif type through a Modernist lens.
